For graduate courses the requirements vary according to the University and the program you apply to.

Whether it is to enter or complete the master's and/or Doctorate degree, you need to take an English proficiency exam to test your reading skill of academic texts. For the PhD, in addition to English, candidates are often required to prove their proficiency skills in another foreign language.

Versátil Idiomas develops exams to assess the proficiency level of candidates or students in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese for foreigners.

Reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary in context are the main skills in this kind of test.

The tests can be online (home testing) or face-to-face.

Important Information

• The proficiency exam consists of 60 multiple choice questions, 4 texts with 15 questions each, conveying reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar in context.
• The English language test can be either online (home testing) or face-to-face.
• Exam length: 3 hours.
• Your results will be made available in up to 4 working days after the test is held. It is directly sent to the candidate, the Department office/coordination of the candidate's intended Graduate Program and the Graduate Head office by e-mail.
• The certification is valid for up to 2 years.
• If the candidate does not get a pass, he/she may take the exam again after 15 working days.
• Candidates are approved provided that their correct answers are:
  • Equal to or greater than 50% for master's degree - B1.
  • Equal to or greater than 60% for the PhD - B2.
• Price: R$ 240.00

Online tests (home testing): How do they work?

Online tests can be taken from any location in the country. Our IT staff prepare the test rigorously, using features that prevent new tabs from being opened on the computer, as well as real-time screen recordings among other processes.

Online tests information

• The test, which will be recorded in real time, will be carried out by an invigilator until its completion.
• Three days in advance, the invigilator will send an invitation (invite) by email for you to access the videoconferencing platform. On the previously scheduled day and time, the student must access the link where the supervisor will welcome them and explain the procedures.
• It is mandatory to use a notebook or desktop computer with camera and microphone.
• The computer must not be set to hibernate or stand by.
• The browsers Chrome or Safari (MAC) can be used.
• The camera should always be kept on.
• You will have to turn off your mobile phone and place it where the invigilator can see it completely during the test.
• It is allowed:
  • To use sheets for draft.
  • To use paperback dictionaries.
• The candidate will be disqualified under the following conditions:
  • Using browser tabs other than the one open for the examination and reading of the text and/or using two or more logins at the same time. You can use the exam login in one electronic device only
  • Use of mobile device.

Face-to-face exams: how do they work?

The face-to-face tests are held at one of our addresses (Bela Vista or Paraíso). Due to the current pandemic, we are using more rooms, thus ensuring the distancing recommended by the authorities.

Information on face-to-face tests

• We offer the face-to-face tests for the English language only.
• Exam venue: Desembargador Eliseu Guilherme Street, 292 - 9th floor - Paraíso - SP.
• The candidate must:
  • Arrive 30 minutes before the test starts.
  • Bring an original identity document and a copy (the same as the one that was attached on the form).
  • Bring pencil, pen, draft sheet(s) and a paperback dictionary.
  • Bring water.
  • Wear mask.
• Food consumption will not be allowed during the test.
• The use of any electronic device is strictly forbidden.
